Chantal OutonAustin's reputation as one of the country's fittest cities has attracted yet another fitness franchise.

Horsham, Pa.-based Slim and Tone, a women's fitness chain that now has two Central Texas locations, plans to open as many as eight more clubs in the area. The clubs offer 30-minute, circuit-style workouts.
Cathy Garza, co-owner of the 2,500-square-foot Slim and Tone franchise in Round Rock, says she wants to open another four clubs in Central Texas, the first of them within the next two years. Most of those clubs likely will open in suburban locations, she says.
Garza's Round Rock club at 3810 Gattis School Road, which opened in July, is within miles of two competing Curves women's fitness centers, but she says she's not worried about attracting new members.
"There are so many women out there who don't exercise at all," Garza says. "We're just scratching the surface. There's so much potential out there."
Besides, she says, Slim and Tone differentiates itself from Waco-based Curves International Inc. and other women-only fitness clubs.
For instance, Slim and Tone's gym equipment not only includes hydraulic resistance machines, but also elliptical machines, upright bikes and recumbent bikes.
And although Slim and Tone workout plans include a 30-minute circuit training routine, Garza says she adjusts the circuit cycle every two weeks, keeping members' workouts fresh.
"Plus, we offer classes and tanning services as well," Garza says. "But we really set ourselves apart with the NutriSystem component."
Last November, weight-loss program provider NutriSystem Inc. (Nasdaq: NTRI) bought Slim and Tone, allowing the company to offer a complete diet and exercise plan for members.
